Region’s transit agencies to receive $538 million in federal funding

CARES Act funding for COVID-19 emergency

The Puget Sound Regional Council is working with transit agencies and the Federal Transit Administration to get $538 million to transit agencies reeling from the COVID-19 crisis.  The funding is included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act approved by Congress and signed by President Trump last week.

Eligible agencies providing transit service within King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties include:

  • Community Transit
  • Everett Transit
  • Intercity Transit
  • King County
  • Kitsap Transit
  • Pierce County Ferry Operations
  • Pierce Transit
  • City of Seattle
  • Skagit Transit
  • Sound Transit
  • Washington State Ferries

PSRC coordinates the distribution of the region's federal transit funds, typically through a funding process every two years. The effort underway now is intended to start providing relief quickly.  The CARES Act funds are intended for COVID-19 related operating costs and are not required to be included in the region's Transportation Improvement Program.

The bulk of the region's federal transit funds are typically distributed by a proportional formula based on the service characteristics of each transit agency.

PSRC has developed Preliminary Draft allocations of the CARES funding by agency and will work with the transit agencies to finalize in the coming weeks.  Please note these numbers could change based on new data.
