ACT Training for Board Members

Do you find it challenging to communicate the importance of racial equity with staff and colleagues that question its relevance to our region?

Have you experienced racially offensive language that calls into question policy choices under consideration?  If so, PSRC has a communication tool that can help!

PSRC is hosting a Joint Board Session on Racial Equity to discuss how to navigate these challenging conversations. On Friday, April 28, from 10:00 am -12:00 pm PSRC staff will discuss the communication tool ACT (Affirm, Counter, Transform) and explain how to apply it to challenging conversations about racial equity.

ACT was developed by the Center for Social Inclusion (CSI) and the Government Alliance on Race & Equity (GARE). The components of ACT include:

  • Affirm: engaging others with emotional appeals and emphasizing shared values;
  • Counter: employing facts and historical context;
  • Transform: identifying the root cause and inviting people to take action.

When engaging in conversations about race, participants can use Affirm, Counter and Transform to turn offensive and uninformed comments into productive and collaborative conversations on racial equity.

The session will allow board members to practice this tool by applying it to racial equity issues facing our region today.

Board members can meet online or in person. Register to RSVP.
