Metropolitan Transportation System: Transportation Demand Strategies February 2005
Transportation demand strategies seek to increase the usefulness and efficiency of the transportation system by reducing the demands on it. But demand strategies do not just affect roadway efficiency, they also create a market for transit and nonmotorized transportation networks and facilities, thereby increasing their efficiency as well.
This is the first Puget Sound Milestones report on transportation demand strategies. It sets a monitoring baseline for programs that encourage the use of alternatives to driving alone. It describes major programs in the central Puget Sound region and provides data about their implementation and effectiveness. Programs highlighted include Commute Trip Reduction, RideshareOnline.com, public vanpool programs, and preferential treatment for vanpools and carpools on ferries. Other long-term programs, such as corridor planning that addresses demand strategies, are also examined.
