Puget Sound Regional Council

PSRC continues to participate in the Washington State Transportation Framework (WA-Trans). WA-Trans is an interagency collaborative effort, sponsored by the Washington State Department of Transportation, to build a statewide transportation spatial data structure that will make available connected transportation mode features across jurisdiction boundaries. It is intended to enhance the potential for geospatial data sharing, and to make it easier to maintain the currency of transportation network information. PSRC actively contributed in elements of the WA-Trans work scope including in initial data framework scope and schema design, and also in the completed Puget Sound Transportation Framework Pilot. The Framework Pilot consisted of uploading Pierce and King County transportation networks into the WA-Trans framework schema, by use of both manual data consistency procedures and purpose-designed data translators. An additional translator was developed to move the WA-Trans formatted network directly to the PSRC geodatabase format. The PSRC translator process yielded an inter-jurisdictional network that is well suited for regional intermodal routing, which is a chief requirement to satisfy the business needs of metropolitan planning.

The WA-Trans project is supported by a grant through the Transportation Pooled Fund Program and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Current work continues under a multi-state transportation data sharing effort built on the WA-Trans data framework, called the One Road project. One Road includes development of a Data Provider web portal for which testing is under way, and framework extension to incorporate roadway data change detection and change management.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is “the WA-Trans Project”?
    • The WA-Trans project is the Washington State Transportation Framework development effort, including a central Puget Sound pilot, initiatives for statewide transportation spatial data sharing, and the multi-state One Road project.
  • Who participates in WA-Trans?
    • Many cities, counties, tribes, and private land stewards, and most extensively, the sponsoring Washington State Department of Transportation have contributed to framework design and data development (view the full list). The One Road Project includes governmental agencies from multiple states.
  • Where does the data come from?
    • Currently, county governments are the chief source of transportation networks. The Washington State DOT contributes the State Route system. The County Road Advisory Board road log is included through linear referencing. Each data provider source requires building a translator and creating a process to establish agreement locations at jurisdictional boundaries.
  • What does the data look like?
    • The Central Puget Sound Pilot network
